I am a freshmen at Georgia Southern University. My major is Biology. This blog is dedicated to the third and last assignment of English 1102. I hope that this blog finds interest in you and you contribute to what I have been studying.
Many Americans believe education is something that everyone will get in America. If you are an American since you can remember, you assumed you would attend school once you reached the right age. Education is a privilege and not everyone in the world can get a fine education (citation).
In my experience in high school, I saw many students who blatantly did not care about school. My senior year I worked as an aid in the department of foreign language. My good friend worked in the department of english. Her and I always found each other talking about things our teachers talked to us about. They all complained about how students just did not care. One of the teachers in my department was upset because it was her first year teaching and she could not figure out why everything she did did not help her students pass. The head of the english department in all her years (25-30) of teaching said, by far, had never seen students so unmotivated and uncaring until her freshmen english class.
My boyfriend worked as a substitute teacher for approximately 18 months. He substituted for middle and elementary schools (grades 1-8) in a west metro Atlanta suburb. While teaching middle school he said he had seen kids walked around with weed in their backpacks sharing with other students. He found many females pregnant. Once hearing of this, I wondered what life would be like for these students in high school.
I believe this is one answer to why students in America have some of the lowest international test scores (citation). Students are not motivated in school. America is a young country and many Americans, although they live in a young country, believe they are the best. Well-educated people know this is wrong. A country as young as ours is not going to be perfect. Examine this for a moment: Out of all the states, which state do you think is the oldest? You may think Delaware (which is), Virginia, and Massachusetts. All three of these are good answers. If we look at one of these, say Massachusetts, you will find they have third in best education system (citation). If you go to this website, you will see the oldest part of the country (New England) ranks in the top 16. Thats 6 of some of the oldest states that are top in our nation. Why do you think this is so? Because they have done trial and error, they have found out what works and what doesn't work. So, of course, america being on e of the younger countries, would have some of the lowest tests scores.
So we have a problem. Why do we have a problem? What solutions could we use to fix the problem?
